Tallahassee, FL – The Democratic Women’s Club of Florida, Inc.’s President, Dr. Maureen McKenna expressed the Club’s disappointment over the Walton County Board of County Commissioner’s decision to replace the Confederate battle flag at the Walton County Courthouse with the traditional “stars and bars” Confederate flag. Dr. McKenna stated, “Walton County’s decision to simply replace one symbol of hatred and oppression for another which symbolizes one of the darkest times of heartache and pain in our nation’s history is very disheartening especially since our nation is still healing from the terrible tragedy that took place in South Carolina.”
Dr. McKenna concluded, “The societal pendulum has begun its shift and is moving towards a more progressive and equal society. Therefore, now is the time to issue a call to action to those who are still living with the racist 19th century mentality to move out of the darkness and join the rest of our nation as we move toward unity, equality and acceptance.”
