Governor Rick Scott destroyed predecessor Charlie Crist’s inexpensive and just semi-automated felon rights restoration process for one reason only – to keep persons of color ineligible to vote. It now takes a minimum of five years to even begin the process of restoring rights, and chances of success are close to zero. For the same reason, Florida prosecutors try teens as adults, even for nonviolent offenses. Instead of a record that will automatically be expunged, teens end up in Rick Scott’s wildly expensive and unjust New Jim Crow quagmire.
